Joel T. Watson of Jamaica Plain MA, died in the early hours of October 1, 2013 at the age of 78. While acute myeloid leukemia eventually took him, he amazed his medical team and delighted his loved ones by beating the odds in more ways than one. With the expert and caring attention of the oncology/hematology staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, he enjoyed an additional year, full of life, following his diagnosis and he left this earth with his hallmark humor and head full of silver hair, despite many rounds of chemotherapy. Born November 16, 1934, in Chicago IL to Cecil and Elizabeth Watson, Joel was a graduate of Antioch College, and earned a Master in Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota. An advocate of accessible, affordable health care for over fifty years, he began his career with the Indian Health Service and ended it with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. It is fitting that he drew his last breath shortly after the Affordable Care Act went into effect. Joel’s activism extended beyond health care. Whether he was at a demonstration for marriage equality at the State House, registering voters in Jamaica Plain, or joining the 50th anniversary March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, he had a deep and abiding commitment to civil rights, democratic ideals and progressive causes. A proud bearer of the “Massachusetts liberal” mantle and the embodiment of “act locally,” he was elected to leadership positions in Boston’s Ward 19 Committee and as a delegate to the state Democratic conventions. In addition to his activism and political work, Joel T. Watson was an avid PBS Newshour watcher, a devotee of NY Times crossword puzzles, an ice cream lover, maker of delicious jams and banana bread, and a stubborn but gentle soul. He read both the trivial and the profound, whether histories, mysteries or compelling works of fiction. He loved to drive and preferred the roundabout way to the direct way, always. The back roads of mid-coast Maine were among his greatest driving pleasures, always providing an excuse to search out a public church supper, a library book sale or another art gallery in the area. Joel is survived by his wife of over thirty years, Eugenia “Henia” Handler; his children, step-children and their spouses: Joel Thomas Watson II of Eugene, OR; Karen Watson and Jamey Eiffert of Fircrest, WA; Joshua Handler and Sada Aksartova of Arlington, VA; Lisa Handler and Patrick Arkins of Philadelphia, PA. His is also survived by brother Stuart Watson of Redondo Beach, CA and five grandchildren: Danea DeGlee, Joel Thomas Watson III, Alexander and Isabelle Eiffert, and Annabella Handler. Many, many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends also mourn his loss. The family welcomes those who would like to honor his contributions to our lives to join them at the Watson-Handler home in Jamaica Plain between 4-7 pm on Friday, October 4 and again from 4-7 pm Saturday, October 5. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to any favorite local NPR/PBS affiliate or the Summer Sundays concerts at Jamaica Pond sponsored by the Emerald Necklace Conservancy.

Eleanor Le Blanc, Born on High Street in Newton Highlands, Mass., in 1933, Eleanor Pillion was the youngest child of Marie-Antoinette Clerc-Renaud, of France, and George (“Jerry”) Pillion, of Boston. Eleanor graduated from Sacred Heart in 1951 and soon after started studying painting at Mass College of Art and the Museum School. She married Ralph Le Blanc in 1958, setting up house first on Marlborough Street in Boston, then on Perry Street in Brookline, and in Newton Centre in the early 1960s. The family spent summers in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. Ralph was an architect and had an office in Coolidge Corner, and Eleanor pursued her artwork—especially photography, collages, silkscreening—casually as she kept house and raised three children. Eleanor and Ralph relocated to Hull (Nantasket Beach) in the late 1970s, where Eleanor built strong friendships and found a community of artists. It was then that she began creating art more actively again, and in the early 1980s she returned to Mass Art for her BFA in photography, studying with Nick Nixon. After finishing the degree, she turned more and more to printmaking and found herself most interested in making monotype prints. This work turned out to be the bulk of her career as an exhibiting artist, which spanned roughly the next two decades. During this time she also enjoyed volunteering (Meals on Wheels deliveries) and teaching adult ed classes (Asian cooking). She always loved good food and mastered many cuisines—French, Asian, Middle Eastern. She also learned several languages, including teaching herself Spanish and Portuguese. Ralph and Eleanor moved in the late 1990s from Hull to Weymouth, where they remained until their final move, to Roslindale, in the early 2000s. Ralph’s various medical problems had become very demanding, and taking care of him was Eleanor’s full-time job. He passed away in 2011, and soon after Eleanor came to her new home at Rogerson House, which could provide the best care for her developing Alzheimer’s.
Eleanor passed away on Sunday, November 10. Many of Eleanor’s abiding loves remained strong until the very end, including music, the visual beauty of the natural world, and conversation with friends and family. She is survived by her three children—Einar, Edmond, and Ondine—and her grandchildren, Alex and Ethan. A memorial service for Eleanor will be held at the Brady & Fallon Funeral Home 10 Tower St. (Opp. Forest Hills MBTA Station) Jamaica Plain (http://www.bradyfallon.com/) on Saturday, December 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor her memory can be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association (http://www.alz.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp) or Rogerson Communities (http://www.rogersonhouse.org/how-you-can-help/) in her honor.
